We use a bunch of different types of ink… We mainly use plastisol, waterbased, and discharge inks… Plastisol inks are the most common. They are petroleum based inks that lay of the surface of the shirt. We can do up to 14 colors for one shirt if need be. Plastisol is the easiest ink to use, because it cleans up so nicely. Also the emulsion used is easy to work with on the screens….

Waterbased inks are used on light colored shirts. Waterbased inks require using a different type of emulsion to prepare the screen. The ink is acts almost as a dye to the shirt. This gives the final texture of the shirt to be very soft and give a nice, “hand” feel. A lot of people like that type of feel.

Discharge inks are a waterbased ink that is used on dark colored shirts. Basically what happens is the ink bleaches out the color of the shirt, and then replaces the color of a shirt with the dye of the ink. We use this method on the belt very often. It also gives the final printed shirt a nice soft feel.

One of these improvements is our new sampling room. Sunburst has two full-time employees devoted to mixing colors 8-10 hours per day. Need a specific pantone color mixed and matched? Need a sample shirt done before you do a run of 20,000 shirts? We can do it in our sample room. We have specific lighting put in so the colors remain consistent when mixed. We also keep many colors pre-mixed for immediate use. We mix all our colors except for black and white with base and pigment. Sunburst has just moved to a 50,000 square feet new location. Luckily Sunburst found the perfect building in the same town in which to house all of there presses and office space. Compared to there old space of 10,000 square feet, Sunburst has grown considerably. Starting off with four automatics, two manuals, and a belt press, Sunburst has nearly doubled in size. Sunburst currently runs eight automatic presses, three manual presses, and one belt press. Also, under the same roof is all-star embroidery All-4-U embroidery services. Basically Sunburst just turned into a one stop shop for screening, embroidery, belt printing, and DTG printing. Can’t wait to see what Sunburst will do next.

Sunburst owns the worlds fastest screen printing machine in the world. It is in the Guiness Book of World Records. This record was set at a screen printing tradeshow, and Sunburst then purchased this press from M&R quickly afterword. The world record is 1805 shirts in one hour. A very impressive feat for any shop to take credit for.
